Tell us about yourself, Summer! What is your story?

My name is Summer March. I am a graduate of Wayne State University with a B.S. in education. I have a love for philanthropy and helping others. I work for several nonprofits and businesses in which I’m able to display many of my talents.

What are three words you would use to describe yourself?

Energetic

Loving

Determined

What is your background in fashion?

Before going into the field of teaching, I had a passion for all things fashion and design. I have designed and sewn many outfits such as pajamas, blouses, and prom dresses. I originally started out in college with a major in fashion design, however, the space I was in did not appeal to my purpose of uplifting and inspiring others. Over the years, I continued styling and being in the world of fashion as a hobby. I have recently launched my own business, Styled by Summer. My goal is to help others feel confident through clothing and find their own sense of style.

What do you love about styling? What drives your passion?

My favorite part of styling is seeing the final looks come together. My passion comes from seeing a client’s mood uplifted because they look amazing in their fit. I’m all about helping and inspiring others so fashion is a fun way I get to do that.

How has your personal style evolved?

Growing up, I had this obsession with cheetah print and boho styles while also loving glitter, heels, and ball gowns. My personal style these days is very much boho glam. It’s a newer concept in the fashion world but it is the best way to describe how I love to dress.

Where do you draw most of your fashion inspo?

For my own personal fashion style, I look to magazines, specifically Essence and Vogue. I also have plenty of fashion boards on Pinterest and like to create different lookbooks for all types of events or outings.

When I’m styling others, I like to get a feel for a client’s personality and personal style, then I create looks out of my own creativity. It’s fun shopping for what local designers offer and seeing whose style best matches the look I’m going for at that specific time.

Who is your fashion icon? And why?

Wayman and Micah, who often style Tessa Thompson. Their styles are bold and colorful, similar to how I like to style. Also, Winnie Harlow because she looks amazing in anything she wears.

How did you get involved with The Power of Girlhood?

I met the founder, Ber-Henda, on Facebook about 6 years ago. I messaged her to be a part of a women’s event I was doing. A year later, she asked me to be a board member for the organization. And we’ve been working together ever since! I have enjoyed being a part of the many great events and projects The Power of Girlhood has done.

What does it mean to you to be styling for our Magazine?

The Power of Girlhood is such a meaningful organization so it is a joy to be the stylist for the magazine. The women on the cover are all powerful and doing great things in their lives. I am glad to be a part of the process to help them look amazing.

How do you think fashion and style contribute to our power and confidence as women?

I wholeheartedly believe that when you look good, you feel good. Fashion, for me, goes beyond just the aesthetic of clothing. Taking the time to really look great when I go out makes me feel like I can conquer anything. I know other women can agree and I want all women to have that same confidence when finding their personal style. The clothing we wear also holds power and can send a message. History shows us countless times how women have used their clothing to get their message heard at times when it felt like their voices were silenced. I hope to see more women gain confidence in wearing what makes them feel their best.
