International Day of the Girl Recap

Who Run the World? GIRLS! Let’s take a moment to celebrate the In Her Voice Project [The Power of Girlhood] as we have wrapped up our first International Day of the Girl Tour. Yep, you heard right. A tour! But, before we get into the deets of the tour and YouTube series; I am going to tell you a little bit more about what the International Day of the Girl is as well as its importance to all the young, beautiful, girls around the world.

The International Day of the Girl is observed annually on October 11th. It is a day to acknowledge and celebrate the rights of girls around the world, while also calling attention to the unique challenges they [girls] face. Each day, there is a girl faced with obstacles such as inaccessibility to education, nutrition, legal rights, discrimination, etc., that could hinder her from reaching her fullest potential. To put an end to the inequity our girls face, the day was declared by the United Nations in 2011 and it has since become an important platform for promoting gender equality and empowering girls.

Our founder, Ms. Ber-Henda Williams, has a deep love for the International Day of the Girl as she spends her days creating spaces to uplift and empower our young girls in every aspect of their lives. She does this through the art of poetry and painting, encouraging conversations around social justice issues, practicing self-care and mindfulness, and most importantly affirmations. These key components are things that helped her become the woman she is today, and she believes that these tools should be shared with all the girls around the world as a means to build them up. But, until she gets around the world, she has been doing this work right here in the Metro-Detriot area for 12 years and she keeps getting better each year at a time.

This year, she took the International Day of the Girl on a week-long tour throughout the Oakland County Schools. Dope, right? This was something Ms. Ber-Henda had always wanted to do a tour, and she slayed it so gracefully! She, along with a group of other dynamic women, went to some schools to encourage young girls through powerful conversations about overcoming barriers, mental health and self-care, business, and much more. They gave these young girls a vision–a vision of how far they can go in life by using their voices and talents for the greater good.

Words cannot express how astonishing this tour was for the International Day of the Girl, click this link to watch the live recap. I am sure you are going to love it!

Now, Ms. Ber-Henda did not just stop there at the tour. She continued her efforts in making the International Day of the Girl, 2023 a bigger event by hosting an additional panel via YouTube with another group of powerful women, myself included. Again, another space was created to share experiences of life along with empowering ourselves and our girls. If you are interested in viewing the panel, click this link to watch it!

The International Day of the Girl means so much to the In Her Voice Project and Ms. Ber-Henda is not going to stop her until she reaches the entire world! Let’s continue to uplift and empower our young girls are they are the future generation.
