Celebrating Empowerment and Resilience: The Power of Girlhood's 12th Anniversary Event Recap

Last Saturday, July 15, 2023, Unity of Farmington Hills was buzzing with excitement as The Power of Girlhood celebrated its 12th anniversary. The organization was founded in 2011 and was founded with the intention of creating a safe space for all girls in the metro Detroit area to navigate through the time known as Girlhood.

From inspiring workshops to engaging activities, the anniversary event left a lasting impact on all who attended. Let's recap the highlights and the empowering moments that made this celebration truly unforgettable.

A Vibrant Atmosphere:

As attendees entered Unity of Farmington Hills, they were greeted by a vibrant atmosphere filled with joy, energy, and anticipation. The venue was adorned with colorful decorations, reflecting the spirit of girlhood and empowerment, provided by ShoTyme Kreachuns! Our girls, mentors, vendors, instructors, and supporters mingled, forming new connections and strengthening existing bonds.

Emphasis on Health and Wellness:

The Power of Girlhood's anniversary event was brimming with dance and wellness sessions designed to foster self care and a healthy lifestyle. From Jawanna Reynolds, sound healing practitioner to Pamela Alexander Yoga Instructor to Wynter Storm, Hip Hop dancer and Taranbir who is currently an Instructor at Raakhe Virse De Academy — the largest Bhangra academy in Michigan which is a traditional Indian Dance. DJ Stacye J held down the soundtrack for the day.

Event Host

A highlight of the anniversary event was the captivating event host wellness activist, Carina Jackson. Her empowering words resonated with attendees of all ages, urging them to embrace their authenticity, dream big, and overcome obstacles. She gave us a powerful reminder that each girl has the potential to make a profound impact on the world.

Engaging Activities:

We had a henna station by Kelz Liberatory Creations and Consulting. This ancient art form has been used all over South Asia and Africa by women and girls to honor sacred traditions of celebration and rites of passage.

Vendors:

We were so honored to have Perspective Counseling Centers, who offer psychological counseling, psychiatric services, group therapy services and LT Consulting & Design Agency, a graphic design and consulting agency.

Community Collaboration:

The Power of Girlhood's 12th anniversary event was a testament to the power of community collaboration. The dedication and support of vendors, instructors, and volunteers played a vital role in creating a memorable experience for all attendees. The event served as a platform for community members to come together, share their expertise, and make a difference in the lives of young girls.

Girl of the Year 2023:

Samari Malone was named Girl of the Year. She is a dedicated Junior at Redford High School and overcome major obstacles such homelessness.
